My First Time at the Georgia CASA Conference

Almost a year ago, I was sworn in as a court-appointed special advocate (or CASA) for children in foster care. In this volunteer position, I am responsible for advocating for the emotional, physical, social, and educational needs of the children assigned to me. When a child enters Care, there are a number of parties involved— from judges, lawyers, case workers, doctors, and teachers. My responsibility is to ensure the child’s voice is heard.

This weekend, I had the privilege of attending the 2022 Georgia CASA Conference. Since I’m still in my first year as a CASA, I wanted to attend to learn best practices, as well as other resources I can lean on while making recommendations for my kids.

Session topics included:

  • Improving education outcomes for youth in foster care

  • Building a strong parent/CASA relationship

  • Understanding authentic youth engagement

  • …and much more!

As I learn more about the needs of children in foster care, I’m excited about the ways my teaching, mentoring, and career experience can support these students. It’s been great to learn from other CASA staff, volunteers, teachers, and DFCS officials on how we can maximize our impact.

Until next time!

Note: I woke up at 5 am to drive 3.5 hours to the conference. Needless to say, I’m tired! I’ll try and do a longer recap once I take a nap. 🙃
